Marshmallow/Drug Interactions:
  • AntibioticsAntibiotics: Based on animal study, marshmallow exhibits antimicrobial activity against P. aeroginosa, P. vulgaris and S. aureus (11; 12).
  • Antidiabetic agentsAntidiabetic agents: Marshmallow may increase the effects of hypoglycemic agents due to reported hypoglycemic effects in animal research (10).
  • Anti inflammatory agentsAnti inflammatory agents: Based on animal study, marshmallow may have anti-inflammatory properties (13).
  • AntitussivesAntitussives: Based on animal and laboratory study, marshmallow root extract and marshmallow polysaccharides have antitussive effects (14; 11; 15; 16).
  • Oral drugsOral drugs: Theoretically, the fiber in marshmallow may impair absorption of oral drugs (anecdotal).
  • Topical steroidsTopical steroids: Marshmallow may increase the topical anti-inflammatory effects of steroids, based on clinical anecdote and theory (17).
