Androstenediol

Interactions

Androstenediol/Drug Interactions:
  • Aminoglutethimide-plus-hydrocortisone therapyAminoglutethimide-plus-hydrocortisone therapy: Based on a clinical study in which aminoglutethimide-plus-hydrocortisone was administered to women with metastatic breast cancer, this therapy may decrease plasma androstenediol and androstenediol free index levels, despite a lack of effects on the metabolic clearance rate (23). Increased dehydroepiandrosterone/delta 5-androstene-3 beta, 17 beta-diol conversion ratios in this study suggested an increase in 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity during aminoglutethimide-plus-hydrocortisone therapy.
  • Androgens (testosterone)Androgens (testosterone): Based on clinical studies, androstenediol may increase levels of testosterone and many of its analogues, which may influence the pharmacokinetics and activity of supplemental testosterone therapies (24; 9; 6; 21).
  • AntibioticsAntibiotics: The immune boosting effects of androstenediol in humans and animals may protect against bacterial infections by Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumonia (14).
  • Antilipemic agentsAntilipemic agents: Based on a review and in vitro study, androstenediol may have metabolic interactivity with HDL, particularly HDL3, and may significantly lower high-density lipoprotein levels (2; 22).
  • Antineoplastic agentsAntineoplastic agents: Based on in vitro studies, androstenediol may stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells and exert androgenic activity on prostate cancer cells, but it may inhibit proliferation and mediate apoptosis in other cancer or tumor cells (25; 18).
  • Antiviral agentsAntiviral agents: The immune boosting effects of androstenediol in humans and animals may protect against herpes virus type 2, coxsackie virus B4, influenza, and arthropod borne viruses (14).
  • EstrogensEstrogens: Based on clinical studies, androstenediol may increase estradiol levels, decrease the clearance of estradiol, and increase the conversion of estradiol to estrone (24; 9; 6; 21), which may influence pharmacokinetic levels and activity of estrogens and estrogenic agents.
  • HydrocortisoneHydrocortisone: Based on animal and other studies, beta-androstenediol may counteract hydrocortisone-mediated immune suppression (14; 15).
  • ImmunosuppressantsImmunosuppressants: Based on animal and human studies, alpha stenediol may upregulate the immune response by increasing the levels of the TH(1) cytokines, IL-2, IL-3, IFN gamma, and counteracting hydrocortisone-mediated immune suppression (14; 15).

Androstenediol/Herb/Supplement Interactions:
  • AntibacterialsAntibacterials: The immune boosting effects of androstenediol in humans and animals may protect against bacterial infections caused by Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumonia (14).
  • AntilipemicsAntilipemics: Based on a review and in vitro study, androstenediol may have metabolic interactivity with HDL, particularly HDL3, and may significantly lower high-density lipoprotein levels (2; 22).
  • AntiviralsAntivirals: The immune boosting effects of androstenediol in humans and animals may protect against herpes virus type 2, coxsackie virus B4, influenza, and arthropod borne viruses (14).
  • AndrogensAndrogens: Based on clinical studies, androstenediol may increase levels of testosterone and many of its analogues, which may influence the pharmacokinetics and activity of supplemental testosterone therapies (24; 9; 6; 21).
  • AntineoplasticsAntineoplastics: Based on in vitro studies, androstenediol may stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells and exert androgenic activity on prostate cancer cells, but it may inhibit proliferation and mediate apoptosis in other cancer or tumor cells (25; 18).
  • Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA): 3beta, 17beta-androstenediol is a metabolite of DHEA and other steroid hormones (16; 26).
  • PhytoestogensPhytoestogens: Based on clinical studies, androstenediol may increase estradiol levels, decrease the clearance of estradiol, and increase the conversion of estradiol to estrone (24; 9; 6; 21), which may influence pharmacokinetic levels and the activity of estrogens and estrogenic agents.

Androstenediol/Food Interactions:
  • Insufficient available evidence.

Androstenediol/Lab Interactions:
  • Hormone levelsHormone levels: Based on clinical studies, androstenediol may increase estradiol levels, decrease the clearance of estradiol, and increase the conversion of estradiol to estrone (24; 9; 6; 21). Studies show that androstenediol increases levels of testosterone and many of its analogues (24; 9; 6; 21).
  • Serum lipid levelsSerum lipid levels: Based on a review and in vitro study, androstenediol may have metabolic interactivity with HDL, particularly HDL3, and may significantly lower high-density lipoprotein levels (2; 22).
