American hellebore (Veratrum viride)

Interactions

American hellebore/Drug Interactions:
  • AntihypertensivesAntihypertensives: Based on human case series reports, American hellebore or its alkaloidal constituents could cause hypotension (12; 7).
  • Beta-agonist drugsBeta-agonist drugs: The isolated constituent of American hellebore O-acetyljervine has been reported to have beta-agonist activity in laboratory studies (31).
  • Beta-blocker drugsBeta-blocker drugs: In laboratory studies, an isolated alkaloid of American hellebore has been found to have beta-adrenergic blocking activity (13; 32).
  • DiureticsDiuretics: Based on human case series reports, the use of American hellebore or its alkaloidal constituents may cause a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal blood flow (7).
  • Heart Rate-Regulating AgentsHeart Rate-Regulating Agents: Based on human case series reports, the use of American hellebore or its alkaloidal constituents could cause bradycardia (12; 7).
  • Nephrotoxic drugsNephrotoxic drugs: Based on human case series reports, the use of American hellebore or its alkaloidal constituents may cause a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal blood flow (7).
  • Renally-excreted drugsRenally-excreted drugs: Based on human case series reports, the use of American hellebore or its alkaloidal constituents may cause a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal blood flow, thereby altering renal function and altering the renal excretion of drugs (7).

American hellebore/Herb/Supplement Interactions:
  • AntiarrhythmicsAntiarrhythmics: Based on human case series reports, the use of American hellebore or its alkaloidal constituents could cause bradycardia (12; 7).
  • AntihypertensivesAntihypertensives: Based on human case series reports, American hellebore or its alkaloidal constituents could cause hypotension (12; 7).

  • Nephrotoxic herbsNephrotoxic herbs: Based on human case series reports, the use of American hellebore or its alkaloidal constituents may cause a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal blood flow (7).
  • Renally-excreted herbs and supplementsRenally-excreted herbs and supplements: Based on human case series reports, the use of American hellebore or its alkaloidal constituents may cause a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal blood flow, thereby altering renal function and altering the renal excretion of drugs (7).

American hellebore/Food Interactions:
  • Insufficient available evidence.

American hellebore/Lab Interactions:
  • BUNBUN: Based on human case series reports, the use of American hellebore or its alkaloidal constituents may cause a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal blood flow, thereby altering renal function and altering BUN levels (7).
  • CreatinineCreatinine: Based on human case series reports, the use of American hellebore or its alkaloidal constituents may cause a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal blood flow, thereby altering renal function and altering creatinine levels (7).
