Interactions with Drugs
  • Antihyperglycemics:Antihyperglycemics: It appears that ALA lowers blood sugar levels. Caution is advised if taking prescription drugs that may lower blood sugar levels. Patients taking oral drugs for diabetes or using insulin should be monitored closely by a health care professional while using ALA. Dosing adjustments may be necessary.
  • Thyroid medications:Thyroid medications: In theory, ALA may alter thyroid levels. Caution is advised in have been diagnosed with thyroid disease. Patients using drugs for thyroid disease should be monitored closely by a health care professional while using ALA. Dosing adjustments may be necessary.
  • Doxorubicin/adriamycin:Doxorubicin/adriamycin: ALA, when given with doxorubicin, provides a protective effect against cardiotoxicity. This may improve the therapeutic index of doxorubicin when given with ALA. ALA also seems to posses the protective effects when administered with adriamycin, although further research is needed.
  • CYP P450 metabolized drugs:CYP P450 metabolized drugs: Drugs broken down by the liver may be affected.

Interactions with Herbs and Dietary Supplements
  • Antihyperglycemics:Antihyperglycemics: ALA may lower blood sugar levels. People using herbs or other supplements that lower blood sugar levels, such as bitter melon (Momordica charantia), should be closely monitored by a health care professional while using ALA. Dosing adjustments may be necessary.
  • Devil?s claw:Devil?s claw: Products that may raise blood sugar levels, such as devil's claw, may reduce the effectiveness of ALA when used for a blood sugar-lowering effect.
  • CYP P450 metabolized agents:CYP P450 metabolized agents: Herbs and supplements broken down by the liver may be affected.
  • Vitamin C:Vitamin C: Vitamin C levels may be increased.
