The Local Focus: Supplier Marv Morales and Mt. Morris Organics
About ten years ago, Marv Morales left a secure, well-paying job as an engineer at a hi-tech company in Colorado to start an organic farm from scratch. He has never looked back.
Today, the Moraleses--a family of eight--live on a 28 acre farm in Mt. Morris, New York, a small town at the top of one of the state's most overlooked natural wonders, Letchworth State Park. "How we live our life is very important to us, " Marv said, "and I think that shows in what we grow."
Most of the acreage at Mt. Morris Organics is dedicated to alfalfa, with only a few acres actively growing vegetables. There's a good reason for this: all the farming is done by hand. Marv plants, tills and maintains his crops without the aid of any machines or synthetic chemical pesticides and fertilizers. It's this personal care that marks the produce he provides his customers, often through farmers' markets in the region.
Eileen Perkins is Manager of the Fresh Department. Over the past five years, she has worked very closely with Marv and has a strong sense of the attention and concern he gives to what he grows. "Marv is really an inspiration to work with," she said. "He is very concerned about bringing us the best--really and truly beautiful vegetables."
